A magnitude 7.8 quake struck 62 km southwest of Maasim in Sarangani province, Southern Philippines today. Since then, over 120 aftershocks have been recorded across the Philippines as of 4:15 pm.

Anticipatory action champion and pioneer in the Philippine civil society Oxfam Pilipinas is in action again for anticipatory action in Albay in May 2026. As #ElNiño2026 and #MayonVolcano unrest loom over communities in Albay, ensuring access to clean drinking water in advance of the converging hazards is critical to protecting health and well-being. The combined risk of dehydration, ash-contaminated water, and water-borne illnesses, especially for elderly people, pregnant and lactating women, children, and persons with disabilities, has triggered early action to prevent these initial impacts from escalating. Under the project, “Anticipatory Action Assistance for Mayon Volcanic Activities and Drought,” Oxfam Pilipinas and MIDAS are pre-positioning new water containers and distributing water vouchers to 200 households in Barangay Maninila, Guinobatan, before shortages become more severe. The vouchers are designed to secure residents' drinking water needs for 30 days, ensuring families are prepared ahead of the peak of Super El Niño and volcanic unrest. This is causing further hardship for Filipinos already struggling to meet basic needs. Oxfam Pilipinas’ Executive Director Maria Rosario “Lot” Felizco said: “Oxfam Pilipinas believes that while the executive order provides a mandate to respond to the disruptions in the global energy supply and its impacts on the domestic economy, the government must think of long-term solutions to transition away from fossil fuel dependence and accelerate the renewable energy (RE) transition. “The Philippine government must also address the concerns arising from our import-dependent, privately-owned oil sources, where consumers bear the brunt of pass-through costs brought about by price volatility. Moreover, the current crisis highlights the need to maximize the potential of indigenous RE sources and to modernize the grid as a priority solution. “We are facing a polycrisis of increased inequality, climate impacts, and an energy crisis. The national energy emergency must address these crises by ensuring that energy solutions are 1.5°C aligned and provide safeguards for Filipinos now and in the future. “There must also be an immediate, unconditional ceasefire and an end to the war. This latest brutal war in the Middle East is having catastrophic impacts on people across the region, including Palestinians in Gaza.
