Local, regional and national Filipino journalists are invited to send story pitches for either a feature article or a photo essay on issues that women and girls face in the Philippines. The chosen journalists will be given a one-time grant of P15,000 to allow them to pursue, write and publish the story for their news organization or partner publication.
We’ll be supporting six local journalists in producing news features and photo essays that tackle the following issues:
- Sexual & Reproductive Health and Rights
- Gender-Based Violence
- Women’s participation & leadership in governance
- Women’s role in climate and humanitarian action
- Women’s role in peace-building & social healing
- Gender equality at home
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
Journalists with at least 3 years of media experience are eligible to apply. They must also ensure the quality and accuracy of their stories and be ethical and gender-sensitive during their field work.
YOUR COMMITMENT FOR THE STORY GRANT:
Grantees will need to produce either a feature article or a photo essay.
A feature article should be around 750 to 1,000 words. It must also have an accompanying photo, which can be taken using a mobile phone or a professional camera by the author or a contributor. The photo essay must include at least 5 photographs.
The articles should be published in a newspaper and/or a news website in time for the National Women’s Month in March. Freelance journalists may apply but it is preferred that they have the assurance of a news editor that the articles will be published. The published stories should include a note that it was “supported by Oxfam Pilipinas.”
Oxfam Pilipinas must also be allowed to publish the articles and the photographs on its website, which will then be shared with the rest of Oxfam’s international confederation.
The journalist must also attend 2 sessions on gender-sensitive and inclusive reporting with Oxfam Pilipinas.
WHAT STORIES ARE WE LOOKING FOR:
Oxfam is a global movement of people fighting poverty and inequality through various humanitarian and development projects. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of cost of living around the world, women and girls have faced multiple challenges in their homes and workplaces and in society in general.
This story grant aims to highlight the different issues faced by women and girls. The stories should also share what can be done or is already being done to address the issues. The stories may highlight the efforts of communities and grassroots organizations as long as they do not conflict with the principles and programs of Oxfam.
HOW TO APPLY:
Interested journalists must send their CV, portfolio or sample articles and application letter to Oxfam Pilipinas’ Policy Advocacy and Communications Manager Ms. April Abello-Bulanadi via ABulanadi@oxfam.org.uk.
The application letter should include the pitch for the feature article or photo essay and the name of the news outlet where the output will be published.
Applications are on a rolling basis until February 3, 2023. We hope to have the stories published within March 2023.
